CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

Mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formally known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is a new mandatory emissions trading scheme in the UK. The aim of the scheme is to reduce carbon emissions of large organisations through energy efficiency.

The CRC Energy Efficiency scheme was released in April 2010 and is aimed at organisations who use 6,000 MWh of electrical energy consumption per year (Based on 2008 figures through half hourly metering), or £500,000 annual electrical fuel bill.

You, as an organisation will need to purchase an allowance for every tonne of CO2 emitted (£12/tonne CO2). At the end of the year, the organisation must surrender its allowances equivalent to its emissions during the past year. This information will be used to publish a performance league table in which you will be measure against other organisations.

After 6 months, the revenue raised form selling allowances will be returned to the organisations, but the league table will dictate whether you receive a bonus, your stated amount or are penalised and fined.

If you exceed your predicted quota, then you can either purchase more credits (Which may be via private companies and thus the cost of the credits may increase) or you will be fined. If you have surplus credits, then you will score highly on the league table and even have the opportunity to sell on these credits to organisations who have produced excess CO2 emissions.

Low Carbon Building, Save Money

brp environmental can provide many support services from energy analysis of your existing building stock through to sustainable design to ensure new building stock is energy efficient. We use the latest software and techniques that accurately analyze and predict a buildings energy and carbon emission output so we can provide robust solutions to improve the performance of your building stock.

Using renewable energy generation can now also offer an income and significantly offset carbon emissions and provide a strong visual marketing statement to say you are serious about reducing carbon emissions.

Providing low energy buildings and reducing carbon emissions will leave you with valuable carbon credits that can be retained or sold for financial benefit.

Don’t get left out in the cold!

Projects registered under Building Regulations after October 2010 now require SAP calculations for dwellings or a SBEM for non-domestic buildings BEFORE starting on site.

brp environmental can provide these services and can continue with this service working alongside the appointed contractor or design team to demonstrate compliance during construction and at completion of this project.

Our fee's are very flexible and we consider the overall cost, not just standard rates per dwelling or building. We support clients with solutions to achieve compliance under Building Regulations, the Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM and PassivHaus.

We also offer initial feasibility stage assessments to inform design and ensure the concept design is on track to achieve the required rating.
