CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme

Mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme

The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme (formally known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment) is a new mandatory emissions trading scheme in the UK. The aim of the scheme is to reduce carbon emissions of large organisations through energy efficiency.

The CRC Energy Efficiency scheme was released in April 2010 and is aimed at organisations who use 6,000 MWh of electrical energy consumption per year (Based on 2008 figures through half hourly metering), or £500,000 annual electrical fuel bill.

You, as an organisation will need to purchase an allowance for every tonne of CO2 emitted (£12/tonne CO2). At the end of the year, the organisation must surrender its allowances equivalent to its emissions during the past year. This information will be used to publish a performance league table in which you will be measure against other organisations.

After 6 months, the revenue raised form selling allowances will be returned to the organisations, but the league table will dictate whether you receive a bonus, your stated amount or are penalised and fined.

If you exceed your predicted quota, then you can either purchase more credits (Which may be via private companies and thus the cost of the credits may increase) or you will be fined. If you have surplus credits, then you will score highly on the league table and even have the opportunity to sell on these credits to organisations who have produced excess CO2 emissions.
